Indian crime television has become the country's most confident streaming genre. Where earlier decades relied on the family saga or the singing-dancing sitcom, the modern Hindi, Tamil and Telugu streaming industries have poured their prestige money into crime — and it shows. Netflix set the standard with Sacred Games, directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane and adapted from the Vikram Chandra novel of the same name. What followed was a genre explosion. Amazon Prime Video gave us Mirzapur, an operatic gangster saga set in UP's hinterland, and Paatal Lok, a caste-class-media investigation thriller that turned Jaideep Ahlawat into a generational star. Netflix's Delhi Crime, based on the Nirbhaya investigation, won the International Emmy for Best Drama — the first Indian show to do so. MX Player shocked the market with Aashram, a Bobby Deol-led drama about a corrupt godman. JioCinema's Asur mixed serial-killer thriller with mythology in a way no Indian show had attempted before. Then came the newer generation: Dahaad, Trial by Fire, Tabbar, Maharani, Farzi, The Great Indian Murder, Rangbaaz, Undekhi and Aarya — each distinct, each worth the binge. Farzi in particular, from Raj & DK, is a crime caper starring Shahid Kapoor that plays like a slicker, faster Breaking Bad. Every series below is streamable free in HD on Bowood.TV. Start with Paatal Lok or Scam 1992 if you want the absolute best writing; Mirzapur if you want the biggest mass entertainer; Delhi Crime if you want the prestige peak.
