Hindi web series have come further in the last seven years than Hindi television managed in thirty. Before 2018 the only prestige Indian TV came from small-studio productions on YouTube; then Netflix dropped Sacred Games and the floodgates opened. Sacred Games itself — adapted from Vikram Chandra's novel and co-directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane — remains the ur-text of Indian prestige streaming. Amazon answered with Mirzapur, a Uttar Pradesh-set gangster saga that turned Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu into household names. Then came The Family Man, a suburban-spy thriller that made Manoj Bajpayee one of the biggest stars in the country all over again. Panchayat on Prime Video proved that a low-key small-town comedy could pull the same numbers as an action series. SonyLIV changed the game with Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, directed by Hansal Mehta — arguably the best-written Indian show of the last decade. Netflix came back strong with Delhi Crime and Kota Factory, Prime Video gave us Paatal Lok and Made In Heaven, and smaller platforms started producing gems like Rocket Boys (SonyLIV), Aspirants (TVF), Asur (JioCinema) and Aarya (Hotstar). This list is the essential starter kit. If you have only time for one, make it Scam 1992; if you have a full weekend, The Family Man and Panchayat are the twin pillars of modern Hindi streaming.
