First in a 1992 four-part comedy drama series based on David Nobbs' novel, `Second from Last in the Sack Race', showing a young Yorkshireman's journey through the British class system. It is 1935 and in the small Yorkshire town of Thurmarsh Henry Pratt is born. His life is soon marked by misfortune, upheaval and eccentric adults.

Growing up in the North of England in the 1930's and 1940's, Henry Pratt spends his life searching for a means of survival and learning how to deal with his eccentric relationships along the way.
