Looking Back in Anger was a 1989 Hong Kong TV series and one of the most watched TVB series by Chinese people in Hong Kong and around the world. Many factors contributed to the success of this series. As well as its tragic but memorable storyline, this series featured a strong cast, with Felix Wong, Deric Wan, Carina Lau, Kathy Chow Hoi-Mei and Maggie Shiu. The popular theme song of the series "Yat sang ho kau" was sung by Danny Chan and later by Deric Wan himself.

Back in the early 1960's, Fung Wing-Cheung could never hold onto one job in spite of his family responsibilities. He dreamt of becoming rich one day, and took to gambling, which resulted in losing all he had. On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Wing-Cheung did not earn enough red pocket money, and promised his wife Yin Fong to borrow some from relatives, however, unable to restrain himself, he did not return from the casino. Unwilling to let her son Kin go hungry, Yin Fong picked pockets on the streets, but was detained by the police for alleged involvement in a murder case. Since she was pregnant, Yin Fong found it ever harder to endure the interrogations. Although the court has arranged for Chu Siu Shan, an experienced barrister to represent Yin Fong, the prejury given by witness Szeto Chun put Yin Fong in a disadvantageous position……

Desperate, Yim Fong had nothing to put her hope on except her unborn baby. She gave birth to Hong, a son and had to send it to Wing-Cheung, which saddened her. Siu Shan believed that Yin Fong was innocent, and tried to trap Szeto Chun into amending his statement. Sai Bond mistook Siu Shan for distorting justice, and refused to give him the chance to repeal. Wing-Cheung brought Kin and Hong to visit Yin Fong, and confessed that he was sorry. Knowing that it's too late, Yin Fong asked him to take care of the two sons. On the final day of Yin Fong, Siu Shan received news that the real culprit was dying and brought along a justice of peace to press for his statements. He notified the attorney general to stop the execution. Yin Fong thought she would be saved; however, Sai Bond thought Szeto Chun was giving perjury, and made up other evidence against Yin Fong.

Siu Shan has become a witness, and hires Yau Kwok-Chung, another queen s counsel to represent Yin Pong. However, the later is drawn into domestic entangles and cannot concentrate which leads to Siu Shan losing confidence in him. Kwok-Chung is mediocre in court, and is rebuked by Sai Bond. He loses the case and the sentence is uncharged. Both Wing-Cheung and Siu Shan are very disappointed. On his visit with his two sons to the prison, Wing-Cheung found that Yin Fong is already severely disturbed, and does not recognise them anymore. Wing—Cheung is very sad. Wing-Cheung cannot manage to face Yim Fong’s death, and has a mental breakdown. He tries to commit suicide with Kin, but is stopped by the police. He is subsequently sent to the asylum. A businessman Lee Ho-Chuen sympathizes with Kin and Hong, and adopts them as foster children. Ho-Chuen is married to San Han for many years and does not have a child……

For 20 years, ?an Han works in a hospital, but manages to raise all her children. Because Kin is the oldest, he quits school to help the family but puts his hopes on the brothers and sister. Siu Ling fails in her university entrance examinations and decides not to try again. She starts to work for a bank to help alleviate the financial burden of Kin. Kin feels that the family's finance is improving, and decides to buy a flat with the "Home Ownership Scheme". Being the last to learn of it, San Wan thinks that Kin has no regards for her views by not consulting her and is displeased. Nonetheless, having learnt the truth and that the family has organized a birthday party for her, she is happy again. Hong passes the examinations and is admitted to the Law Faculty at the university. Sau Wan is pleased as well as worried, as Kin has to bear a heavier load than before.

Siu Ling and others pool together some money to buy an air conditioner for the new flat in order to please Sau Wan, who, however, charges them of being spendthrift, but finally gets to understand their care for herself. Lee Lap, Ho-Chuen’s brother, has failed in his business and cannot his daughter, Lee Wah, who is coming to Hong Kong to attend university. He asks Sau Han for help. Sau Wan promises to help Lee Nah, despite what has happened before. Being shy and gentle, and knowing of how her father has treated Sau Wan in the past, Lee Wah does not feel at ease, and always makes a fool of herself in front of Kin. Lee Hah has taken to Hons and always tries to get close with him. Hong does not feel anything in particular for her, but summons her to do small chore for him. At the university, Hong feels inferior because of his family background, and tries to convince others of his superiority, to the jeers and sneers of his peers……

Robbed on the street, Lee Nah breaks her glasses. Her father does not send her allowance in time, she is thus penniless. Having gone without lunch, she passes out on the streets. Kin sees her and takes her to a clinic. Kin sends Hong to order a new pair of glasses for Lee Hah. Lee Nah is pleased that Hong is so considerate. Hong hears of some insider information from Yiu Ming, and places his scholarship on a stock. He wins and is won over by Sai Bond's capabilities. Ho Yat Fu, Kin’s best friend, has always been fond of Siu Ling, but does not express it because he has achieved nothing so far. Yat Fu works for a TV station, and asks Kin to help in a show which focuses on three different people who were born on the same day. In discovers that he has the same birthday as Ngai Cho-Kwan, who comes from a well-to-do family, and a famous fashion designer, and feels inferior……

Fear to offend Fung, Hong runs after him to apologize. In order to achieve his ambitions, Hong tries to maintain a good re1ationship with Fung who has caused his mother's death. Kin feels very disappointed and the two brothers fall into heated argument. To revenge, Yiu Ming forces the boss of the university canteen to terminate Kin’s employment. Kin therefore works day and night as driver to support the family. As he continues his work in the television show, Kin has the chance to know Cho-Kwan better. He finds that despite her coming from a wealthy family, Cho-Kwan is easy-going and generous. She's never snobbish and they could talk frankly to each other. They become close friends. Cho-Kwan lost her mother at a very young age. Her father has been using all means to groom her daughter and secure her position in the upper class. Being subjective and authoritative in nature……

Hong feels being misunderstood by his family and decides to leave home and stay with his friend in the hostel. Sau Wan feels depressed. Lee Wah works part-time as tourist guide and comes across Kin who is appointed as driver at the same travel agency. They have much more chance to see each other. Hong has been neglecting his study as he is spending time on his investment. He fails in the test and asks the professor to give him another chance. He is required to hand in a paper in substitute for another test, and he asks Lee Nah to help him with the research work. Since he can't stay with his friend in the hostel any longer, Hons has to ask Kin’s pardon and move back to stay with the family. After spending time together, Kin develops a liking for Lee Wah. When he finds out that Lee Nah has been loving Hong, he is very depressed……
